Who we are

The Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks (rBLH-BR) was established in 1998, is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Our mission is to promote, protect and support breastfeeding, collect and distribute human milk with certified quality and contribute to reduce infant mortality.

rBLH-BR is a strategic action of the National Policy on Breastfeeding that not only collects, processes and distributes human milk to premature and low birth weight babies, but with the Human Milk Banks (HMBs) perform guidance service and support breastfeeding.

Currently, the Brazilian Network has more than 200 human milk banks distributed in all states of the country, some with home collection. The rBLH-BR also has over 150 collection stations of human milk.

The Brazilian model is worldwide recognized by unprecedented technological development that combines low cost with high quality that besides distributing human milk according to the specific needs of each baby, increases the effectiveness of the initiative to reduce neonatal mortality.

In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the rBLH-BR as one of the actions that contributed most to reducing infant mortality in the world in the 1990s From 1990 to 2012, the infant mortality rate in Brazil decreased 70.5 %.

The coordination of rBLH-BR is headquartered at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) and has technical support from two units in Rio de Janeiro: the National Institute of Women, Children and Adolescents Health Fernandes Figueira (IFF) and the Institute of Scientific and Technological Communication and Information in Health (Icict).
