Breastfeeding issues

Human milk is considered the best source of nutrition for children up to 2 years, precisely because it is tailored to the needs of human beings in this phase of life. Thus, it is a complete food, containing balance of fats, carbohydrates and proteins in the exact measure to provide growth and immunity of the babies, besides tackling childhood infections, develop the brain and increase resistance to chronic diseases such as asthma, allergy and diabetes.

There are evidences that the substance may even increase intelligence and reduce the chances of developing cancer in the mother and baby, and contribute to the strengthening of the bond between mother and baby.

Breastfeeding is considered the most effective strategy, focusing on children, to combat child mortality, since studies indicate that human milk is capable of reducing up to 13% preventable deaths of children under 5 years old.

One of the main objectives of the Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks (rBLH-BR) team is to support the woman-mother and her family at this such delicate stage of life, which is breastfeeding. Therefore, in this section, we list the main issues that arise before breastfeeding at different moments surrounding the life of the baby and the woman-mother: during pregnancy, maternity, first week at home, in the first month, during the coming back to work, and when the child starts complementary feeding.

We also bring the issues faced in extended breastfeeding and the appropriate procedures on special situations such as in the cases of low birth weight infants, prematurity, adoption etc.
